BBQ Jello

I ran across this online, and it's so incredible, I thought I'd give it a try.

  • Here's the recipe:

1 package lemon or orange Jello
    1 ¼ cups hot water
    1 can tomato sauce
    1 ½ tablespoons vinegar
    ½ teaspoon salt
    dash of pepper

    • Dissolve jello in hot water. Add tomato sauce and other ingredients. Blend. Pour into individual molds. Chill until firm. You can serve four to six people for about a nickel each.
    • Note: For extra spiciness, add any of the following before filling: onion juice, seasoning or celery salt, cayenne, Worcestershire sauce, pepper sauce, or horse-radish.

I wasted way too much time searching Wal-Mart and Hy-vee for onion juice. I considered trying to use a juicer on half an onion, then decided it wasn't worth the effort.
I found celery salt at the store: $3.98! Do I look like I'm made of money? The hell with that.
I didn't have any vinegar, but I have a bottle of white wine (Sauvignon Blanc, to be exact) that I bought for $2.77. If it isn't vinegar, it has to be a very close relative.

I don't have any ramekins, so I used coffee cups (I despise coffee, but I have coffee cups anyway).

From left to right: Pork, the other white meat is just the original mixture.
MFA Incorporated has added seasoned salt.
I Love My Dad has added Worcestershire sauce.
MO Highway patrol has added cayenne.

A couple of hours or so later, it's time for a taste test. I added a bit of mayonnaise to each one.
And something to wash it down.
 Here we go!
Original mixture: not overly terrible, but not good either. Well, sorta terrible.
Next: with the seasoned salt: It never set up; still kind of runny.
I can't say the taste was better, but it wasn't quite as bad as the first one.

Still hopeful, it's time for the one with the Worcestershire sauce.

Yuck.

Time to cleanse my palate.

 And with the added cayenne.

Yuck times two (although the cayenne adds an interesting kick in the aftertaste).

Cleanse! Cleanse! Cleanse!

All in all, this was a bust. But it was fun, so I'll periodically subject myself to other (hopefully) more palatable food experiments.

  2. Thanks! Other than the taste, it wasn't too bad. I don't know what I'll try next, but it may have sardines in it. Or hot dogs.
